We all celebrate Independence Day. However, each of us defines it with a different perspective. What’s more interesting is that it keeps changing with time. As a school kid, Independence Day was defined by a special 3 hour session at school. Marked with speeches by students/teachers, singing patriotic songs and competitions like fancy dress, essay writing etc. More importantly, an free day from the daily hectic study schedule.

As a college kid, it meant a holiday to chill out with friends and acquaintances. Fondly remembered by the places visited and the fun experienced. As a forced workaholic, Independence Day now defines a day off from the busy hectic schedule to relax a tired body and stressed mind seldom mixed with movie outings or catching up with relatives.
The perspective changes. To my grandfather, Independence Day meant remembering the freedom fighters of the nation who fought to achieve freedom we now take for granted. The day denotes a tribute to the struggle of common man from the pre-independence era and thanking him for the sacrifices made.
Don’t get me wrong. The values still holds true. However, life have got a lot busier to stop and ponder over the history. We respect the past deeds but are slightly tilted more towards defining the Independence Day from our perspective. So what is your definition of Independence Day?
